HIGH QUALITY VETINARY SERVICES FOR ALL TYPES OF HORSES

GASTROSCOPY

Gastroscopy is the tool we use for diagnosing Gastric Ulceration.

A narrow endoscope is passed down into the horse's stomach where the veterinary surgeon can then visualise the extent, if any, of the ulceration or inflammation. The image is displayed on a screen and owners are welcome to watch this procedure. The horse must be starved in order to visualise the entire stomach and we give a little sedation for ease and safety. Once the horse is awake enough, we suggest he is grazed in hand prior to travelling home and offered food throughout the day with close monitoring.

Once we know the extent of gastric ulceration, and in which parts of the horse's stomach, the veterinary surgeon then formulates the best treatment plan. This can be in the form of oral omeprazole, sucralfate, antibiotics or other gastric supplementation, alongside change in management for reduction in stress and availability to forage.
