Chris Johannson

Chris qualified from Glasgow University in 1992 and worked in several predominantly equine practices before joining Western Counties when it was formed in 2000. He holds the RCVS Certificate in Equine Practice, was one of the first vets to pass he BEVA/BVDA equine dentistry examination. Other areas of interest include racing and competition horses, surgery and diagnostics. Chris is also a member of the Association of Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons  and is an FEI permitted treating Veterinary Surgeon.  He has  been elected to the Council of the British Equestrian Veterinary Association and sits on the Equestrian Sport Committee and Allied Professional Committee.  When time permits he is keen to support his daughters at BE and BD competitions.

Eefje von Berg - Associate
MSc Cert AVP MRCVS

Eefje von Berg

Eefje joined the practice in mid February 2017 having qualified at the University of Ghent in Belgium. She has worked in equine practice in Holland and more recently East Yorkshire. She has particular interests in equine medicine and anaesthesia.

Outside of work Eefje enjoys outdoor sports including riding, surfing, tennis and skiing as well as cooking - when time allows

Simon Joyner - Director

RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Equine Surgery Orthopaedics

Simon Joyner

Simon qualified from Cambridge University in 1999 and worked in a mixed practice in Northamptonshire where he was involved in setting up an equine unit before moving to Devon and joining Western Counties in March 2003. Simon became a partner in 2004 following the retirement of Brian Crawford. He is largely based in North Devon and Exmoor. He holds the RCVS Certificate in Equine Orthopaedic Surgery. His particular areas of interest include lameness diagnosis, orthopaedic surgery, stud work and AI.

Outside work Simon enjoys sailing and surfing. The family's first pony has arrived which will involve an increasing amount of Pony Club activities.

Tom Chatfeild-Roberts - Associate
BVetMed(Hons)  MRCVS

Tom Chatfeild-Roberts

Tom qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in 2017.  He has seen practice as a student here at Western Counties on numerous occasions as well as completing externships at equine referral hospitals in Newmarket, Leicestershire, Kent and Yorkshire.  He has particular interests in equine anaesthesia and surgery, working as part of the hospital and ambulatory vet teams

Tom has been involved with horses from an early age coming from a Leicestershire hunting family.  He has developed a keen interest in racing, having worked in both flat and jump racing yards.  He has point to pointed for the last six seasons riding over 20 winners  and he hopes to continue point to pointing both in Devon and Leicestershire  over the coming seasons

Hayley Parker - Associate

MA(Hons) Vet MB MRCVS


Hayley Parker

Hayley qualified from Cambridge University in 2013 and subsequently spent the Summer working at a racehorse hospital in South Africa and then as a volunteer vet at The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust.  Before joining Western Counties at the end of 2014, she completed a 12 month equine internship at a referral hospital in Leicestershire. Hayley enjoys all areas of equine work, particularly anaesthesia and medicine cases

Hayley works as part of the ambulatory vet team covering the North Devon and Exmoor areas as well as being part of the Hospital team.

Outside of work she enjoys skiing, running and watersports.  She also has experience in eventing and used to play polo at university

Adam Kukaswadia - Intern
DVM  MRCVS

Adam Kukaswadia - Intern

Adam joined the team at Western Counties in early October 2017.  He grew up in Southern Ireland and qualified in 2015 having attended Szent Istvan University in Hungary.  He has seen practice in Ireland, USA, Germany and New Zealand and most recently been working as an equine assistant in north Somerset. 

When not at work Adam can usually be found in the water and has a passion for diving and is trying his hand at surfing.  He enjoys both watching and playing rugby
