Chris Johannson BVMS CertEP BAEDT MRCVS
Chris qualified from Glasgow University in 1992 and worked in several predominantly equine practices before joining Western Counties when it was formed in 2000. He gained the RCVS Certificate in equine practice in 2002 and recently passed the prestigious BEVA/BAEDT equine dentistry exams, a qualification currently held by very few vets or equine dental technicians in the South West. Other areas of interest include racing and competition horses, surgery and diagnostics.

Simon Joyner MA VetMB CertAVP(ES-O) MRCVS
Simon qualified from Cambridge University in 1999 and worked in a mixed practice in Northamptonshire where he was involved in setting up an equine unit before moving to Devon and joining Western Counties Equine Clinic in March 2003. Simon became a partner in the practice in 2004 following the retirement of Brian Crawford and is largely based in the North Devon and Exmoor side of the practice. His particular areas of interest include lameness diagnosis, orthopaedic surgery,stud work and AI. Simon has recently passed the RCVS Certificate in AVP (Equine Surgery-Orthopaedics).
Outside work Simon enjoys sailing and surfing but with young children fears that the first pony may not be far away!

Stuart Altoft BVetMed BAEDT MRCVS
Stuart graduated from London University several years ago and before he joined us in October 2005 he was working in practice in Nottinghamshire. Stuart generally works on the eastern side of the practice helping to cover the East Devon and Somerset areas. His areas of professional interest include internal medicine, dentistry and dermatology. He has recently passed the BAEDT exams in equine dentistry and is enrolled on the RCVS Certificate in Equine Practice.
Outside work he enjoys playing the guitar and Kick boxing!

Alison Bennell BVMS MRCVS
Alison qualified from Glasgow University in 2007 and subsequently spent a year in a large Equine Hospital in Sussex before joining Western Counties in 2008. Alison adds to the first opinion team bringing considerable experience in anaesthesia and critical care of hospitalised patients. Alison has particular interests in equine medicine and foal care and is studying towards the RCVS Certificate in Equine Internal Medicine. Alison will be working closely with the current team of equine veterinary surgeons in the Mid Devon and East Devon areas.
Outside work she rides her horse when time permits and is futiley attempting to train her dog "Rabbit"!

Emma Deyes BVSc MRCVS
Emma qualified from Liverpool University in July 2005, after a varied university career including a project in South Africa working with big game and a brief trip to Peru assessing diseases which affect livestock and children. Following two years in mixed practice on the Isle of Wight Emma took a job with Liphook Equine Hospital as a member of their ambulatory team. She left the Island last August to work in New Zealand and to enjoy a bit of travelling on the way home. She joined Western Counties at the end of June 2010 covering the North Devon/Exmoor area with Simon. Emma enjoys the variety of rural practice but has particular interests in wound management and dentistry while outside of work she is a keen competitive sailor. |

Alexis Clark BSc(Hons) BVM&S MRCVS
Alexis qualified from Edinburgh University in 2009 before spending 18 months at a large equine hospital in South Gloucestershire. She joined the team at Western Counties in February 2010 and enjoys the variety of first opinion practice with her areas of interest being ophthalmology, wound care, orthopaedics and emergencies, while she also enjoys anaesthesia and critical patient care. Alexis will cover the East Devon and Somerset areas with Stuart.
Outside of work she rides and competes her horses ‘Paddy’ and ‘Ruby’ having a particular interest in show jumping

Sarah Springthorpe MRCVS

Sarah joined Western Counties in December 2010 as our first veterinary intern having graduated from Liverpool University earlier that year. She has a broad range of equine veterinary interests in particular anaesthesia and post operative care.
