Equine upper airway function – recorded  during exercise

Western Counties Equine Hospital have recently upgraded our overground endoscope. This is an endoscope that fits alongside the bridle passes up the nostril and sits on top of the soft palate in the pharynx. Used to assess horses that make an abnormal sound when exercising or those tiring too quickly during faster work.

Accurate recording of the upper airway motion during harder exercise and studying the video at slow speeds allows assessment of the pharynx, larynx and associated structures. Abnormalities that may not be seen when the horse is examined at rest can be detected during faster work.

  • Can be used on gallops or on an all-weather arena depending on type of horse
  • Arena available at Bicton or at Western Counties Equine Hospital

Upper airway conditions readily visualised include

  • Laryngeal paralysis
  • Soft palate displacement
  • Pharyngeal collapse
  • Aryepiglottal fold deviation

Diagnosis and accurate targeted treatment can be readily achieved.
