Chris Johannson - Director

Chris Johannson

Chris qualified from Glasgow University in 1992 and worked in several predominantly equine practices before joining Western Counties when it was formed in 2000. He holds the RCVS Certificate in Equine Practice.

Chris focuses on racing, sports horse performance and breeding as well as pre-purchase examinations.  In addition he is part of the emergency surgical team at the hospital as well as seeing referral dental cases.

Chris is also a member of the Association of Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons providing veterinary cover at Exeter and Newton Abbot Racecourses, is an FEI permitted treating veterinary surgeon and an OV for Export of Horses. 

Outside of work much of his time is spent supporting the training and competing of sports horses based at home as well as enjoying walking the South West Coastal Path when possible

David Seymour - Associate

David Seymour  

David graduated from the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College in 2014 and started his career at Newmarket Equine Hospital, completing a 6 month racing internship. From there, he worked in equine and large animal practice in Cornwall before joining Western Counties in June 2018. David works both in the hospital and as part of the ambulatory team. He has particular interests in lameness, surgery, studwork and advanced dentistry. He is a member of ARVS and is part of the team that provides Veterinary attendance at Point to points and the races.
Outside of work David enjoys surfing, sailing and shooting. Although no longer playing rugby he remains an avid spectator.

Simon Joyner - Director

Simon Joyner

RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Equine Surgery Orthopaedics

Simon qualified from Cambridge University in 1999 and worked in a mixed practice in Northamptonshire where he was involved in setting up an equine unit before moving to Devon and joining Western Counties in March 2003. Simon became a partner in 2004 following the retirement of Brian Crawford. He divides his time between ambulatory work - mainly in North Devon and Exmoor – and work in the hospital. He holds the RCVS Certificate in Equine Orthopaedic Surgery.

His particular areas of interest include lameness diagnosis, imaging, orthopaedic surgery, stud work and AI. Simon is the hospital vet for MRI referral cases and part of the MRI technician team.
Outside work Simon enjoys sailing and surfing as well as supporting his children who are competing their ponies in Pony Club, BE and BS.

 Adam Kukaswadia - Associate

Adam Kukaswadia 

Adam is rejoining the vet team here at Western Counties at the end of December 2019. He was our intern in 2017 and then headed off to travel and expand his equine veterinary experience in the southern hemisphere. We look forward to welcoming him back. He will be working mostly in the north Devon and Exmoor area with Simon Joyner. Outside of work Adam enjoys watersports particularly diving and surfing. He also enjoys both watching and playing rugby

Nicolas Moulin - Equine Surgeon

Nicolas Moulin

Nicolas qualified from Lyon University in 2014 and did his final year specialising in Equine Surgery and Medicine.

Nick then undertook a one year internship in a surgical referral centre in Ontario, Canada before coming back to Lyon for his surgical residency.

He joined Western Counties in 2018 as the hospital based surgeon after finishing his residency and following completion of his exams in 2020 is now a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons. 

He is also consulting in orthopaedics and surgery at B&W Equine Hospital (Breadstone) two days each week.

His particular areas of interest include soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, poor performance and lameness diagnosis.

Outside of work Nick enjoys hiking and paddle boarding

Jade Harding - Intern Equine Vet

Jade Harding

 Jade is the latest intern to join Western Counties and started her post in December 2019. Jade went to Cambridge University and qualified in October 2019. She has completed extra mural studies across a wide range of veterinary practices (equine, small animal and farm)

Outside of work Jade's interests include rowing, running and riding

Hayley Parker - Associate
MA(Hons) Vet MB

Hayley Parker

Hayley qualified from Cambridge University in 2013 and subsequently spent the Summer working at a racehorse hospital in South Africa and then as a volunteer vet at The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust. Before joining Western Counties at the end of 2014, she completed a 12 month equine internship at a referral hospital in Leicestershire. Hayley enjoys all areas of equine work, particularly anaesthesia and medicine cases having completed a certificate in equine medicine. Her particular interest lies in sport horse medicine and rehabilitation; she is an FEI treating vet and experienced in equine acupuncture.

Hayley works as part of the ambulatory vet team covering the Somerset area as well as being part of the Hospital team.

Outside of work she spends her spare time skiing, running and walking the South West coastal path with her dog Elsie. She enjoys retraining racehorses and competing her own event horse.

Eefje von Berg - Associate MSc Cert AVP (EM) MRCVS

Eefje von Berg

Eefje qualified from the University of Ghent in Belgium in 2005. Her career started working as a small animal and equine vet in Calne, Wiltshire. After a year she decided to move back to the Netherlands to take a one year Equine Internship at the veterinary hospital in Emmeloord. After working in a small animal and equine practice in the Netherlands for several years she returned to the UK in 2013 to work as an equine vet in East Yorkshire and subsequently joined Western Counties in 2017. She has particular interests in equine medicine and anaesthesia. In 2018 she gained a post graduate certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Equine Medicine).

Outside of work Eefje enjoys surfing, outdoor bootcamp and has discovered that walking the coastal path is great fun and there are plenty of walks still to discover. She likes baking and oftern brings her creations to work for her colleagues to try.
