Kate graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2001 and moved to the US for an internship at a large equine surgical referral hospital in Ocala, Florida. She stayed in Florida for a couple of years before beginning her intensive surgery residency and Master of Science programme at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Kate’s 3-years research was in Dr Bertone’s lab and was centred around the investigation of the gene expression profile of osteoarthritic cartilage. Following completion of residency, she moved to New Bolton Centre, University of Pennsylvania as a Junior Lecturer in Equine Surgery. This was a clinical surgical post working in the internationally renowned Penn Vet Equine Surgery Team, where she remained for 2 years, prior to moving to Canada to work as a surgeon in a busy equine surgical referral hospital.
After close to a decade in North America, Kate returned to the UK, initially as a Senior Lecturer in Equine Surgery at Dick Vet, University of Edinburgh, and then latterly as University Equine Surgeon and Head of Service at the University of Cambridge. After many years combining clinical work, academia and senior administration, Kate has returned to private practice to focus on delivering an excellent surgical service to patients, clients and referring veterinary surgeons within a fun and ambitious hospital team. Her main professional areas of interest are emergency surgery and critical care, and the broad discipline of soft tissue surgery. A committed teacher, lecturer and mentor, Kate looks forward to continuing to help and support veterinary students and junior vets as they embark on their careers.
